He arrived with his mother and siblings at Castle Garden November 30th, 1887. They went straight to Springwells Township, Detroit, to join his father, Johann Sr., who had made the trip a few months earlier.
John Jr. first lived with parents on Morton Street, then moved to a short distance away to 561, later 3817 Livernois.
He and his family were devoted members of the Zion Lutheran Church.
John worked as a core maker in the auto industry from the time he was a young man, an employee of Flower Stevens Manufacturing Company and Ford Motor Company.
He married Augusta Wilkewitz in 1901 at Zion Lutheran Church; they had six children, three boys and three girls. Sadly, only two of these children (Walter and Edmund)lived well into their adulthoods. After Augusta's death in 1913, John was remarried to Ida Louise Jaffke, 1915 in Detroit; they had three children, two boys and a girl.

From his granddaughter, Judy (Wolnosky) Packard, e-mailed 3/13/11: "I was 10 when my Grandpa died. Years before, many family wakes were held in the family home. Harry J. Wills was the funeral parlor later used for many other relatives. I can remember my father, Ervin giving money to the older cousins so all the young kids walked from the funeral parlor to a local ice cream parlor to have a "cousin party" to bring joy to serious situation."
