Mary attended nursing school at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York and interned at Bellevue Hospital. After nursing school she enlisted in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. She tended to the needs of wounded servicemen in Jacksonville, FL where she met her future husband, Thomas E. Fletcher, who had been in her care. They were married July 24, 1945, in Duval County, Florida. She left the Navy and became the mother of their two sons, Thomas and Richard. Mary continued the practice of nursing until she retired due to her health from Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where she was Head Nurse. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mary was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Thomas E. Fletcher, Sr., and two siblings.
Surviving are: sons, Tom Fletcher, SC; Dick Fletcher, NC; grandchildren, Kristin Chubbs, AZ; Melanie Skowronski, MI; Chris Fletcher, HI; Colin Fletcher, TX; and Ian Fletcher, NC; nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday, December 1, 2013 from 3 – 5pm at Anderson Funeral Home, 611 Robert Smalls Parkway, Beaufort, SC.
Graveside service will be held Monday, December 2, 2013, at 10 am, Beaufort National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, her family would appreciate donations be made to Mary's favorite charity in her memory: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1893, Memphis, TN 38101-9950.
