After attending Eaton, he studied drama at Trinity College at Cambridge. Upon the start of World War I, he received a commission as a second lieutenant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was originally buried on the battlefield but later, his remains were interred at Voormezeele Enclosures with a military marker. The character in the play of Mr. George Darling in the play "Peter Pan" was named after him. He was first cousin of the author, Daphne du Maurier. "Peter Pan" became a 1911 novel and continued into films with the first being a silent film in 1924.
