U.S. Congressman. He attended Schodack Academy, Yale College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced to practice law in Plattsburgh, New York. In 1857, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1861. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention, in 1864 and appointed U.S. consul to Crete by President Lincoln. He later was U.S. judge on the International Court for Suppression of Slave Trade on the West Coast of Africa, serving (1866 to 1870) and a member of the New York State Assembly, (1884 to 1885). After leaving politics, he engaged in iron manufacturing at Clinton, New York and then lived in retirement until his death.
