Civil War - Enlisted on 9 December 1861 from Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan at 35 years of age; mustered in on 13 February 1862, Company I, 14th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; promotoed to Corporal on 15 March 1863; wounded in action on 1 September 1864 during the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia (gunshot wound of face, right side); mustered out on 4 Janaury 1865 and transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps, Company E, 2nd Michigan Regiment as a Sergeant; mustered out on 28 July 1865.


"Bessel, A. J.. Serg't 14th Michigan. {Sept. 1], 1864. Fracture of inferior maxilla. Facial ligatedin continuity. Discharged January 4, 1865." -- The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion. Part III, Volume II. (3rd Surgical volume) by U. S. Army Surgeon General's Office, 1883.
