OBSEUIES OF MARY E EDWARDS

A large number of relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Carter, of Shawnee avenue, yesterday afternoon to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of their deceased daughter, Mrs. Mary Ellen Edwards. Services were conducted at the house by Rev. Thomas Cook, pastor of the First P. M. church. There were many floral offerings of beautiful design, indicating the high esteem in which she was held. The remains were buried in the Shawnee cemetery.

She was the only daughter of George Sage (born 1831 in England) and Anna Appleton/Sage/Carter (born 1836 in Wales). Before marrying and taking on the last name of (Frederick) Edwards, she was first married to John Henry Clemow (1865-1961). They were married in Plymouth, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania on June 25th 1886. Because Mary Ellen was still a minor at the time, her Mother Ann Appleton Sage Carter gave her consent for the marriage to take place. John Henry and Mary Ellen had 2 (of 3) surviving children. Their names were Hamilton Sage Clemow (1886-1945), and Edith Kaletia Clemow (1891-1976). In March of 1904, after 18 years of marriage, Mary Ellen and John Henry Clemow were divorced.
