U.S. Congressman. He attended Washington College, graduated from Ohio University in 1826, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1827, and commenced to practice law in Charleston, Virginia. Entering politics, he was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1830 to 1832, 1834 to 1836). In 1841, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1845. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was elected as a delegate to the Virginia State constitutional convention in 1850 and a judge of the eighteenth judicial circuit of Virginia (1852 to 1858). In 1861, in an effort to devise means to prevent the impending Civil War, he was a member of the peace conference held at Washington, D.C. Unsuccessful, he was a delegate to the secession convention and resumed the practice of law until his death.
