The son of Donald and Lillian Bixby Abbey of Burlington, and Donald Lambert Abbey; he was a graduate of Burlington High School and the University of Vermont with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Upon graduation he served as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He worked for the General Electric Company in various locations, retiring from Gas Turbine Controls in Schenectady, N.Y.
He was married to Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Helzer Abbey, who predeceased him.
He is survived by his son, Peter D. Abbey of Tucson, Ariz.; his sister, Faith N. Abbey, of Philadelphia; and a brother, Bruce J. Abbey of Syracuse, N.Y.; as well as three loving granddaughters, Laura, Sarah and Brooke, of Tucson, Ariz.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was an avid skier, sailor and outdoorsman, a good friend to all and an honorable man.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. till Noon, Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St. (at McClellan St.), in Schenectady, N.Y., and interment with Military Honors will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
