U.S. Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a prosecuting attorney in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. He enlisted in September 1861, serving as a Private in Company A, 171st Ohio Infantry and was honorably discharged on August 20, 1864. After the war he was elected judge for the ninth judicial district of Ohio, in March 1877. In September 1880, he resigned when elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving in five succeeding Congresses from December 13, 1880, to March 3, 1893. Not seeking re-election, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
