Actress. She will be best remembered for playing 'Annie Johnson', the self-sacrificing mother and housekeeper in the race-themed motion picture "Imitation of Life" (1959). She received an Academy Award nomination for her effort. She worked as a chorus girl at the Cotton Club and turned to acting, as she performed in stage productions at the Ebony Showcase Theater. She marked his film debut playing a nurse in "Pinky" (1949) and for the next ten years, she was limited to stereotypical parts usually as a cleaning woman or housekeeper with warmth and intelligence. After achieving success in "Imitation of Life" (1959), she experienced roles in the films "Tammy Tell Me True" (1961), "Walk on the Wild Side" (1962), "Papa's Delicate Condition" (1963), "The Singing Nun" (1966) and "Two Moon Junction" (1988). Among her many TV credits include "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Marcus Welby, M.D." and "Judging Amy". (bio by: C.S.)
