Major Smith served during the war between the states, from 1861 to 1865,first as Brigade Quartermaster, on the staff of his brother,General Wm. D. Smith, in the defense of Charleston.After, he was Division Quartermaster under Gen.Jos. E. Johnson,in the Army of the West and surrendered at Greensboro,Nc., in 1865.He was employed for many years as a traveling salesman for the Ga. Chemical Works and retired about 10 yrs.ago. He is survived by his daughter, Miss Julia A. Smith, a son,Mr. W.P. Smith, of Jackson,Miss.
