Our hero, John Garfield James, a kind, nice happy person, went to be with his Father in Heaven on Wednesday August 28, 2013. He was our Happy Pappy. Born to William and Elizabeth (James) James on October 9, 1916 in Hazleton, PA. He met his beautiful future wife, Edith Lewis, while working at the A&P grocery store. On August 7, 1937, they eloped and married in Schickshinny, PA. They had two children, Nancy R. and John C. and recently celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary. John retired after 32 years from the W.T. Grant Company in 1976, as a Retail Store Manager, and continued working part-time in the retail and motel fields until fully retiring at age 90. He was an ardent Phillies and Mariners fan, and especially enjoyed traveling with Edith in their RV. John was a 50-year plus Royal Arch Mason, Scottish Rite, as well as a Masada Shrinner and was awarded the Knights York Cross of Honor while active in the Wenatchee and Zarthan Lodge in Leavenworth. He was a lifelong Methodist and was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William, Robert, Richard, and grandson Brandon.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Edith; children, Nancy (Carl) Babiar and John C. (Suzanne) James; grandchildren, Dawn (Bruce) Darling, Marc (Rose) Babiar, Susan (Sean) Edwards, J. Douglas James, Leigh (Steve) Venera, and Jason (Melody) James; 14 great grandchildren; as well as sisters-in-law, Rebecca Wright and Ellen Kost.
