Inventor. He was an American firearm designer. He was the designer of the AR-15 which was adopted by the military as the M16 rifle. He held some 100 patents on his inventions, and was a co-founder of Ares Inc., a weapons research and development company based in Port Clinton, Ohio. During World War II, he was a Marine in the South Pacific. His military experience brought an interest to firearms.
