Poet. He was a 20th-century French poet and screenwriter who was known for composing ballads and poems for some of the most influential French films of the 20th Century. He participated actively in the Surrealist movement and was also a member of the agitprop Groupe Octobre. His fourteen collections of poetry included "Paroles Words" in 1946, "Spectacle" in 1951, "Rain and Good Weather" in 1955, "Histoires Stories" in 1963, "Fatras" in 1971, and "Things and Others" in 1973. Writing about hope and love, he used free verse, irregular verse, occasional rhymes, puns, and cascades of words intentionally in disarray. Ranked as one of the best screenwriters, Prévert wrote a number of screenplays for films such as "Bizarre, Bizarre" in 1937, "Port of Shadows" in 1938, "The Night Visitors" in 1942, "The Children of Paradise" in 1945, and "Seine Meets Paris" in 1957. In his later years, he wrote poems and screenplays for a number of animated movies. As a youngster, he left high school to work in a department store in Paris. During World War I, he was drafted for military service in 1918, serving in the Near East. He died of lung cancer.
