Ambassador, Diplomat. Appointed Ambassador to the Vatican by President George H. W. Bush in 1989 and served until 1993. Considered to be instrumental in the Vatican's recognition of the state of Israel. Served as an American ambassador under three presidents, much of that time to African nations prior to his assignment at the Vatican. Serving first in Burundi and then in Uganda, he was considered an authority on the independence movements in Africa. Melady wrote 17 books and over 180 articles on the leaders of these movements, one book with his wife about Idi Amin, "Profiles of African Leaders, Idi Amin Dada: Hitler in Africa." Other books were, "The Ambassador's Story" and "Ten African Heroes," In addition, he was president of the African Service Institute, based in New York, and taught at the Washington, D.C. Institute of World Politics. He also had appointments at numerous colleges and universities. He received honorary doctorates from 30 universities and was honored by six countries. He was awarded two papal knighthoods, was a Knight of Malta, a recipient of the Grand Cross of the Order of Malta, the Order of Pius IX and the Order of St. Gregory the Great.
