William "Lamochatee" Weatherford
Birth: Sep. 28, 1765
Elmore County
Alabama, USA
Death: Mar. 24, 1824
Little River
Baldwin County
Alabama, USA

Native American. Chief William "Lamochatee" Weatherford, "Red Eagle" Chief of the Red Stick band of the Creek Indians. Son of a Scottish Trader, Charles Weatherford, and a Creek Indian Princess, Sehoy McGillivery III. Famous for his involvement in the Fort Mimms Massacre and the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. During this period 1813-1814 referred to as the Creek Indian War, he fought against three different U.S. Armies. Chief Red Eagle was very instrumental in the early fight to keep the White settlers from destroying the Indian territory of the Delta region of what is now South Alabama. He was strong, educated, and forcefull. He resisted the settlers initially, because they were basically stealing the Indian lands and driving the Indians out of their homes. Later in life he assisted in numerous treaties to protect both the settlers and his Indian people. Tragically, he died a few years before the United States Government forced all remaining Indians to leave South Alabama on the Trail of Tears evacuation to the Southwest. Thousands of the Indians perished on this march to Oklahoma. He is survived by thousands of proud direct decendents, many of whom still reside in the Delta Region of South Alabama. (bio by: Richard Sheely)
