John Branch Shute was born on May 2, 1873 in Hendersonville, Tennessee, the son of John M Shute (1832–1921) and Martha B (Donelson) Shute (1847–1893). {His obituary has his surname as Schute.}

He lived in Hendersonville until he was 30 years old, after which he left to work for the US Engineering Department and traveled in Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee and in Panama inspecting engineering projects.

While living in Sheffield, Alabama, John was married on October 14, 1933 in the study of Reverend Prentice A Pugh of the Church of the Advent in Nashville, Tennessee to Mrs. Hautie (Carlene (Warren) Fowlkes (1896–1965), who was secretary to Porter Dunlap, Tennessee's Railroad & Public Utilities Commissioner. The couple returned to Tennessee in 1935 and resided in Hendersonville.

A civil engineer in the business of surveying and living on Shackle Island Road in rural Hendersonville, Sumner County, John was 90 years old, married and had metastatic prostate cancer when he died on June 14, 1963 at Nashville's Park View Hospital.

Survivors included his wife Hautie, son John Donaldson Shute of Jackson, Tennessee, daughters Mrs Ralph Leftwich in Columbia, Tennessee and Mrs Douglas D Loree of Ann Arbor, Michigan, sister Mrs Mattie Dunn at Hendersonville, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on June 15th at Cole & Garrett Funeral Home in Hendersonville, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
