Born in New York, he was a Cadet at West Point from 1860 to June 13th. 1864, when he graduated and was promoted to First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. He spent a year on Sheridan's staff as Assistant Engineer, then saw action in the Shenandoah campaign and at Appomattox, where he was present at the surrender of Robert E. Lee. He resigned from the Army on the 28th. September 1865, having risen to the rank of Brevet Major, and, from 1870 to 1872, served as Colonel of Engineers in the Egyptian Army, after which he returned to New York and became a manufacture of water purifiers.
