Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Fuentelapeña, Juan Soldevilla y Romero received his education at the seminaries of Valladolid, Toledo, Santiago de Compostela and Tuy, obtaining degrees in theology and canon law, and was ordained priest in Valladolid in December 1867. Serving in the archdiocese of Valladolid as curate economous, pastor, canon and later archpriest and capitular secretary of the cathedral chapter, he was appointed Royal Preacher of the Royal American Order of Isabel la Católica and member of various boards of directors of charity homes. Named bishop of Tarazona in 1889, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Zaragoza on December 16, 1901. Pope Benedict XV created him cardinal with the title of Santa Maria del Popolo in 1919. The Cardinal was murdered while visiting a monastery near Zaragoza along with his driver by an anarchist group. He was given a funeral with military honors.
