ISAAC CRISMAN, Lake County Pioneer, Dies
Civil War Veteran Dies At Home In Miller

Isaac Crisman, 83 years old, pioneer resident of the Calumet Region and civil war veteran, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Miller, Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, following an illness of several months. Mr. Crisman was born in Carroll county, Ohio, in 1839 and came to this section with his parents 10 years later and settled in Portage township, Porter County. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 73rd Indiana Volunteers and marched with Sherman to the sea. In 1871, Mr. Crisman succeeded in having a post office established in the Michigan Central railroad station town in his township; which was named Crisman in his honor.
Mr. Crisman, who was one of the first white men to come to this section of the state, was famous for the interesting stories he told of early pioneer life along Lake Micigan, in which Indians, deer, bears and hunting excursions played a big part.
Mr. Crisman, who was a prominent member of the local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic, was twice township trustee of Portage township and twice its assessor. Seven years ago he came to Miller from Porter County to make his home with his daughter. Besides Mrs. Miller, he is survived by a son, Bert Allen Crisman, also a resident of Miller, 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Following short services in the home of Mrs. Miller, the body of Mr. Crisman will be taken to McCool, where funeral services will be held in the Methodist church of that place, to be followed by interment in the McCool Cemetery.
(from the papers of Twyla Boswell)

Note: the village of Crisman was laid out by his father, Benjamin Grammer Crisman.
