Benjamin Franklin McNutt was the son of Alexander McNutt and Rachael Grigsby. His father died when he was 1 year, 7 months and 23 days, on 29 Mar 1812, from pneumonia. He graduated from Washington College, now Washington and Lee in 1829. He studied medicine in Philadelphia and moved to Vicksburg, MS. "He was shipwrecked and drowned off the coast of Mexico, between Vera Cruz and Tampico when the brig "Vigne" went down with all on board." Genealogies and Reminiscences, Henrietta Hamilton McCormick, 1897, Chicago, p 105. This was in the Gulf of Mexico.

Family connection suspsected:I found a B.E. McNutt and a Charles McNutt on the 1871 Delinquent Tax List for Rapides Parish, La., with a small amount of money due. Benjamin's brother, Anderson McNutt died there in 1860. Taken from the 23 Aug 1873 Rapide Gazette (Louisiana), plus the same for 1877 and 1881 tax lists.
