James was a professional baseball player, drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, he then played for the Newark Bears.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He retired from John Runnells Hospital in Watchung.
He is predeceased by his wife, Vita Marie (Sorce) Petty (1998) and his son, Theodore James Petty (2002)
Surviving are his children, Vita (Daryl) Sworkin, Joann (Gregory) Rymer,Toni M. Petty, and James T. Petty; his grandchildren,Nicole Rymer, Jacqueline (Wayne) Litchman, and Kevin (Ronnie) Bobbitt; great-grandchildren, Isabella and Sophie Bobbitt and his companion, Cathy Tamaro.
