Carol W. Kresses of Niagara Falls passed away peacefully January 9, 2014. Carol was born in Niagara Falls in 1923, and was the daughter of the late John and Veva Cornwell. Carol attended local schools and when graduating from North Junior High, she was the class valedictorian and wrote the school song and also wrote the school poem for Niagara Falls High School. After obtaining her BS degree from Buffalo State College, she excelled in elementary education and then earned her Masters degree in Remedial Education from NU. She taught in the Niagara Falls School system for 32 years. She also taught an adult ed course called "Travel, People and Places". At the the old library on Main Street, she conducted a music story hour for many children who played instruments, individually and in groups. In 1940, at the age of 23, Carol earned her Pilot's license and marched for women's rights.

Her musical career began at the age of 5, when she played piano and the cornet. She belonged to the Canadian Kiltie Marching Band, the Niagara Falls Concert Band, The Niagara Falls Philharmonic Orchestra, The Canadian Drum Corp., and the LaSalle Legion Post #1142 Junior Band. She was also a member of the Town of Niagara Active Hose Marching Band, which her late spouse, Stanley, directed.

She was a member of the Greater Musicians Union #106. Carol privately taught piano and drum lessons for many years and tutored remedial reading. Her hobbies were traveling, dancing, reading and roller skating. She was active in St. Paul's Methodist Church, past president of the Philharmonic Guild, co-chair of the Philharmonic Youth Group and secretary of Operation Petticoat (k/n/a Pride & Progress). She was an active volunteer for the Caroline House, Festival of Lights, The Niagara Cultural Center, Art Park and belonged to the College Club and the Tattler Inc. Club. She was also a benefactor for the Niagara County SPCA.

Along with her late husband, Stanley, she traveled to all seven continents and visited 153 countries, islands and territories, including Antarctica, Tibet, Borneo, "Red" China, South Korea, Russia, all five "Stan" countries and Central Asia.

Carol was married to the late Dr. Stanley Raymond Kresses of Niagara Falls, and is survived by daughters, Kimberly Veva (Michael) Weather of Arizona, and Kolette Carol (Brandon) Piasecki of Williamsville; five grandchildren, Kristen Stanton (Christopher) Murtha of North Carolina, Bruce Stenzel of Washington, DC, Danielle Spengler of California, and Paige and Tyler Piasecki of Williamsville, and also three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Jackson and Reagan Murtha of North Carolina.
