Death claims pioneer John James Graves in Spokane since 1889.

Father of Jay P. Graves, president of the Inland Empire System.

John James Graves, father of Jay P. Graves, president of the Inland Empire System and of Frank H. Graves and Will G. Graves, attorneys, died yesterday morning at 5 o'clock at his home 01008 Cochran Street.

He was born in Boone County, KY, October 16, 1819, and at the age of sixteen years moved with his parents to Hancock County, Ill, living there until the fall of 1889, when he came to Spokane. As he was 70 years old when he came to this city he has been identified with no active business enterprises.

Mr. Graves was married twice, having four children by his first wife, Mary Jane Johnson. They were: Mrs. Harriet C. McGuffey of Cody, Wyo.; Elias J. Graves of Kansas City, Mo; Mrs. Margaret E. Boydston of Brentwood, Calif.; and James Addison Graves, now dead.

By his second wife, Orilla Landon Berry, he had four children: Frank H. Graves, Jay P. Graves and Will G. Graves of Spokane and Carroll B. Graves of Seattle.

Mr. Graves was a pioneer, and came from a pioneer family. His first ancestor in this country was Captain Thomas Graves, who came from London in 1607 and acquired a plantation in Virginia, on the James River. His father, Major Reuben Graves, moved to Boone County, KY, in 1797. Mr. Graves possessed the typical pioneer traits, sterling mental qualities, high moral worth and great physical strength. He always lived a healthy, vigorous and useful life, and his work and example were for good.

Carroll B. Graves of Seattle arrived in Spokane yesterday morning. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence: The Rev. H. Edward Mills officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at Greenwood.
