Inscription

The inscription on the back of the monument at the top of the hill reads: "In Loving Memory of Charles Melville Hays. Born in Rock Island, Illinois, May 16, 1856. Died in the foundering of the S.S.. Titanic, April 15, 1912. And so he died. And the example of his simple devoted consecrated life is our priceless heritage. We are different people and we are better people because this man lived and worked and loved and died."
