Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start the Civil War, he joined the 139th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry, Union Army in July 1862. Rising through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel in command of the regiment, he served in actions at Cold Harbor, Richmond, Swift Creek and Petersburg. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865.
