Austrian stage actress known as Margarete Schell-von Noé. Daughter of Elisabeth "Elsa" Rotter, a gifted harpist and a pupil of Anton Bruckner, and Karl Noé von Nordberg, a psychiatrist and head of a sanatorium. She married Swiss playwright and poet Hermann Ferdinand Schell in Vienna, April 12, 1925, and eventually gave up her career to raise their children, all of whom became actors: Maria, Carl, Immy, and Maximilian Schell.
