U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College, in 1824, from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1829 and began the practice of medicine in Washington, Pennsylvania. Entering politics, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress, serving (1849 to 1853). After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of medicine. In 1863, he was elected a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives and served until his death.
