U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Washington and Jefferson College, in 1847, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1852, moved to Chicago, Illinois and commenced the practice of law. Entering politics, he successfully contested the election of Charles B. Farwell and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress and served (1876 to 1877). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law in Chicago, until retiring in 1887 and relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, where he resided until his death.
