Roman Catholic Archbishop. Born in northern Italy to a family of farmers of poor economic means, due to which the father, Candido, was forced to leave the country to the United States of America seeking better opportunities, where he remained for approximately ten years, Francesco Fasola entered seminary at an early age on the island of San Giulio and was ordained priest for the diocese of Novara in June 1921. Joining the Oblates of Saints Charles and Gaudentius of Novara, a then reeently established congregation by Father Silvio Gallotti, his first assignment was that of diocesan assistant of the Catholic Action, until being name rector of the Varallo sanctuary in 1942. Appointed coadjutor to Msgr. Giovanni Battista Peruzzo for the see of Agrigento, Sicily, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Vartana on May 2, 1954. In 1960, Pope John XXIII named him bishop of Caltagirone, while his successor, Pope Paul VI, promoted him to the metropolitan see of Messina. Throughout his ministry, Fasola earned the respect and admiration of many following his initiatives in favor of the underprivileged. Retiring from office in 1977, he moved to Novara to serve once again as rector of the Varallo sanctuary. He passed away at the Oblates' house there but his body was transferred to Messina for internment in the local Cathedral Basilica. His cause of beatification was introduced by the archdiocese of Messina in 2005.
