It becomes our duty, painful though it be, to announce to our readers this week the death of HON. HARRIS F. OTIS, Mayor of Topeka, and one of our most respected citizen [sic]. This unhappy event took place on Thursday morning, the 9th inst., and was the result of a fall met with on the morning of the day previous, in accidentally stepping from a flight of stairs which had recently been removed.
Mr. Otis emigrated from Manchester, Vermont, becoming a citizen of our place in the Spring of 1859, though returning and awaiting the Spring of 1860 ere he conveyed hither his family. As a man he was esteemed and respected by all who knew him. In his death the cause of humanity has lost an earnest champion, and society one of her brightest ornaments. The citizens of our community in mourning his loss will sympathize with the bereaved family in their hour of affliction.
The National flag, on the corner of Kansas Avenue and Sixth street, was displayed at half-mast on Thursday.-Topeka Tribune.
