Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Holland, Wilhelmus Marinus van Rossum entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in 1873, professed his vows the following year, and was ordained priest in October 1879. Assigned to the lectureship of Latin and rhetoric in Roermond in 1880, between 1883 and 1892 he served as professor of dogmatic theology at the scholasticate of the Redemptorist Fathers in Wittem, where he also acted as prefect of studies from 1893 until 1895, when he moved to Rome, forming part of the Redemptorist community there while serving the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office as a consultor. Appointed general consultor of his Congregation, Pope Pius X created him cardinal deacon of San Cesareo in Palatio in the consistory of November 27, 1911. Named President of Pontifical Biblical Commission in 1914 and Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary in 1915, he successively served as Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith from March 1918 until his death. Decorated with the grand cross of the Order of Sankt Stefan, van Rossum was elected archbishop of the titular see of Cesarea in Mauretania in 1918, receiving his episcopal consecration in the Sistine Chapel from Pope Benedict XV. The Cardinal passed away in his native country shortly after being recovered in a Maastricht hospital having felt ill following a visit to Denmark. Originally buried in the crypt of the Redemptorist church of Wittem, seven years later his remains were transferred to the church itself when a splendid monument featuring the Cardinal in prayer was completed.
