Ballerina. In 1787 she was admitted to the ballet school of The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, and in 1798 she was made a prima ballerina. Her enormous success as a dancer was not so much due to technical skill as to her lively gestures and facial expressions as well as her fascinating personality. Her career on the stage spanned more than 40 years. Posterity owes her a special debt of gratitude for her having convinced the young Hans Christian Andersen to choose a profession other than dance.
