NEWSALEM- Dennis "DJ" James Ferderer Jr., 20, New Salem, died while serving in active military duty in Ad Duluiyah, Iraq, on Nov. 2, 2005. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at St. Pius Catholic Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Terry Wipf as celebrant and the Rev. Oscar Lukefahr as concelebrant. Burial will be at North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery at 3 p.m. Monday with full military honors provided by the Honor Guard, Fort Carson, Colo.

Dennis was born Jan. 3, 1985, in Bismarck, the son of Dennis and Claudina "Dina" (Ternes) Ferderer. He attended school in New Salem, and during his senior year of high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He graduated from New Salem High School in 2003.

Church and his faith were a strong part of DJ's life. He served as an altar boy. During his training as altar boy, he wasn't shy about correcting the others. For him, things needed to be done the right way; he always got in the last word.

DJ loved life on the farm. After his duty in the military, his dream was to come back to the family farm. Among his interests were: nature, hunting pheasant and deer, football, basketball, wrestling, and he was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. To DJ, others always came first - he didn't want others to fuss over him. He made friends easily; he was a good listener and a great story teller; he had a curious mind. These qualities will be remembered and missed by his loved ones.

After his first year in Iraq, DJ wanted to complete more training to become a ranger and air borne and then return to Iraq again. On Nov. 2, DJ was in a Humvee that was moving a colonel to another location, when an RPG with an armor piercing head was launched and hit the Humvee. In the Humvee with DJ were, Sgt. Hill, who was injured, and Major Kelley. His total dedication to the Army was evident. His military family was first and foremost to him.

He lived in constant danger, but was always concerned about the men in his unit. DJ trusted that although he was in harm's way, "If it happens, I'm ready," or "This could be my last day." Others heard him say, "All in all, we are here for a reason." DJ certainly found the good in people; he wanted to give the Iraqi people, the peace that he grew up with.

He is survived by his parents, Dennis and Claudina "Dina," New Salem; his brother, John, U.S. Air Force, Washington state; his grandparents, Baldwin and Irene Ternes, Bismarck; special friend, Alexis Torres, Atlanta, Ga.; and numerous aunts, uncles, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John N. and Julia Ferderer; two uncles, Herbert and Joseph Ternes; and a cousin, Avery Garr.
