Poet. He was a Venezuelan romantic poet of the 19th Century. Among his poems are: "Vuelta a la Patria," "Flor," "Poema del Niágara," and "Por Siempre Jamás." He translated works of English, German, Italian, Danish, Chinese, Portuguese, French writers into Spanish. He also translated to Spanish the Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven." Most of his adult life, he lived in exile for political reasons, first in Porta Rica and then New York City. By the time he was comfortable enough to return to his homeland, his health was declining.
