South Carolina Governor, US Congressman. He was an American Republican Party politician, who served as the 112th governor of South Carolina from 1987 to 1995. Born the son of a textile factory worker, his education was a struggle from lack of funding and his negative teenage behavior. After attending public schools in Greenville and with the funding from an uncle for the private McCallie School in Chattanooga, he attended the University of South Carolina, and eventually graduating in 1985, while serving as a US Congressman, with a Master's Degree in Political Science from American University. Starting a political career, Campbell served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1970 to 1974, leading an opposition to the racial integration of public schools. In 1974 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the office of Lieutenant Governor. From 1976 to 1978, he served in the South Carolina Senate. In 1978 he was elected to serve as a United States Congressman for eight years before becoming only the second Republican to be elected governor of South Carolina since the Reconstruction Era following the American Civil War. He is best remembered for luring the German automaker BMW to the state, the strong government support after Hurricane Hugo, and restructuring state government. Besides his political endeavors, he had previously been a real estate broker, farmer, and businessman, owning several fast-food chains. He was the President and CEO of the American Council on Life Insurance from 1995 to 2001. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1976 and was also the South Carolina Campaign Chairman for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984. At the age of 61, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, thus leaving his public political life. He still enjoyed playing golf and following South Carolina politics each day in the newspaper before being admitted to an Alzheimer's long-term facility in August of 2005. The cause of death was a heart attack from complications of Alzheimer's. While a college student, he eloped on September 5, 1959 at age nineteen and the couple had two sons.
