Jakoniuk came here from Poland as an adult and joined the Army, in part, to get an education he otherwise couldn't afford. He was a technician skilled in electronics.
He entered the Army in August 2001 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April 2002.
Neighbors say Jakoniuk's mother died in May, and his father, Cezary Jakoniuk, of Bialystok, Poland,is
critically ill.
