CANNON.--On the 11th Feb., 1888, the Village of Sharbot Lake was overspread with deep gloom and sorrow, in consequence of the removal by death of Addie Cannon, the dearly beloved wife of Mr. J. H. Cannon (who, by her amiability and devoted Christian life, had endeared herself to every one who knew her) to the better land. Mrs. Cannon was born on the 15th of September, 1870, in Winneshiek County Iowa, of religious parents, Raymond and Elizabeth Wartman, who trained her up in the fear of the Lord, and very carefully sought every opportunity to confer upon her a good education. She became proficient in music, for which she had a good, natural talent. For some years she presided at the organ in God's house at divine worship, rendering the service of praise both attractive and profitable. In the year 1882, the family removed to Sharbot Lake; this place was to witness the more important changes in connection with the history of our dear sister. Happily by the grace of God this was the place of her second birth. In the year 1884, there was a spiritual awakening and revival of the work of God in the village, through the earnest and indefatigable labors of the Rev. Mr. Watts. Amongst those who became anxious about salvation, was the subject of this memorial sketch. She intelligently and promptly decided for God, and by faith in Christ crucified was blessedly saved, the proof of which was found in her subsequent consecrated Christian life. She steadfastly followed the Lord, her God, adorning the doctrine of God her Saviour in all things. About two years ago she was united in marriage to Mr. J. H. Cannon (eldest son of Dr. Cannon, of this village), with whom there was the most complete reciprocity of conjugal affection, their wedded life being very happy and harmonious. On the 7th ult. she gave birth to a baby boy, whose young spirit the Lord took to himself in about twenty-six hours after he was born. From this Mrs. Cannon never rallied, inflammation with high fever set in; so that, notwithstanding all the medical skill and close attention that could be rendered, the disease made such rapid progress that it terminated fatally in five days. During all her severe illness she continued quite conscious, thoughtful and happy in her Saviour. One one occasion she asked for her Bible, and read a chapter audibly in that Divine word which had been her comfort and stay in health; then asked some friends to sing that beautiful hymn, "Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?" Their feelings soon betrayed them, hence broke down; she, notwithstanding her great weakness and suffering, took up the strain and sang through the beautiful stanzas in sweet harmony. On the night before she died, she sang again the same sweet hymn, showing us that the power of the blood of Christ to cleanse from all sin, was a subject of deep experience with her, and that she rested all her hopes for eternity on the great atonement of her precious Redeemer.
