U.S. Congressman. Born in York, Pennsylvania, he attended York County Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1811 and commenced the practice of law in York, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, (1815-19). In 1833, he was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-third Congress, serving until 1835. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, served as president of the York Bank and was a delegate to several Whig National Conventions. He also served as an agent of the heirs of William Penn for their interests in Springettsbury Manor Center, in the City of York, until his death at age 69.
