U.S. Congressman. He engaged in candy manufacturing, in banking, and was a director of the Gettysburg College and trustee of the Gettysburg Seminary, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Entering politics, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-eighth and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving from 1903 to 1913. In 1915, he was again elected to the Sixty-fourth Congress, serving until 1917. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed commissioner of banking of the State of Pennsylvania in 1917 and engaged in manufacturing pursuits until his death.
