Mr. Gilbert was a native of Spartanburg County and a son of the late Walter H. and Ruth Shipman Gilbert, Sr. He was retired from the SC Department of Transportation and was a retired sergeant with the SC National Guards where he served in Iraq.
He is survived by seven brothers: Ron (Carolyn) Gilbert of Abingdon, VA, Don Gilbert of Spartanburg, Gary (Brenda) of Campobello, Alvin (Glenda) of Inman, Robert (Kathy) of Inman, Darryl (Edna) of Spartanburg, Joseph of Wellford; three sisters: Gwen Ogburn of Inman, Ellen (Carroll) Guffey of Inman, and Amy Gilbert of Wellford. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 to 12:00 noon on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon in the Funeral Chapel officiated by Rev. Ron Gilbert and Rev. Monte Guffey. Interment will be in M. J. "Dolly" Cooper Veteran Cemetery in Anderson, SC.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P. O. Box 915, Memphis, TN.
The family will be at the home of a sister, Ellen Guffey, 332 Calvery Road, Inman.
