Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Saint Pierre des Ports at the gates of Graulhet, Clément-Emile Roques entered seminary in Lavaur, later moving to that of Albi and ultimately at the Catholic Institute of Toulouse. Ordained priest in Rodez in April 1904, from that year until his episcopal nomination in 1929, he was involved in the seminary of Barral, serving among others the posts of administrator, prefect of studies and superior. Appointed bishop of the diocese of Montauban, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Rennes on May 11, 1940. Distinguishing himself in aiding Jews and members of the resistance during the Second World War, Roques was created cardinal priest by Pope Pius XII with the title of Santa Balbina in the consistory of February 18, 1946 and furthermore decorated with the Légion d'honneur by the republic of France. He died in office in 1964.
