He was the son of Erich Voelke and Lorraine Clarke Voelke Griffenkrantz.
In 2000 he married Traci Maultasch.
They were the parents of two children.

He graduated from West Point in 1998 with a degree in European history and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was an infantry officer for 14 years and earned several awards including the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He was selected for the Joint Chief's Internship as a captain where he earned a master's of policy management from Georgetown University in 2007. He was a veteran of Operation Joint Guardian in Kosovo and had served four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. His last assignment was as the executive officer for First Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, Second Brigade Combat Team, Third Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia. He was the second highest ranking officer of the 30th Infantry Regiment. He died from non-combat related injuries in the town of Mazar-e Sharif according to the public affairs office of the 3rd Infantry Division. He was preceded in death by his father, Erich Voelke. Survivors included his wife, two sons, his mother, grandmother, two brothers, one sister and many other relatives.
