Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as as 1st Lieutenant in Company E, 37th New York Volunteer Infantry, then as a Captain and Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Major General John A. Dix. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "efficient and meritorious services during the war".
