U.S. Congressman. He attended public schools, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1816 and commenced to practice law in Attica, New York. He became involved in politics and held several offices in Attica, when he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William Patterson, serving (1838-39). In 1840, he was appointed surrogate of Genessee County New York, was appointed surrogate of Wyoming County, in 1842 and was a member of the New York State Senate, (1843-46). In 1847, he was again elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving until 1851. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 62.
