U.S. Congressman. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, was town clerk of Bennington, New York, justice of the peace and postmaster of Bennington, (1849-53, 61-66 and a member of the New York State Assembly, (1860, 65-66). He also was commissioner of public accounts, (1868-70) and collector of internal revenue for the twenty-ninth district of New York, (1871-73). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1877. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was elected as a Republican Lieutenant Governor of New York, serving (1880-82).
