U.S. Congressman. He attended Middleburg Academy, was a teacher at the Academy, became inspector of the common schools, in 1825 and served as Deputy Sheriff of Le Roy, New York, in 1825. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1827 and commenced to practice law in Le Roy. In addition, he was a member of the New York State Assembly, in 1832 and editor the Le Roy Gazette, in 1838. In 1839, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was secretary of the Wyoming County Insurance Company, (1851-65), served as Postmaster of Warsaw, New York, (1861-70) and was president of the Genesee County Pioneer Association in 1872. He also engaged in the lumber trade and practiced law until his death at age 76.
