Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Castelnuovo Scrivia, Cesare Zerba entered seminary in Stazzano, later moving to that of Tortona. Pursuing his studies at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum S. Apollinare and the University of Pavia, he was ordained priest in July 1915 and soon went on the serve as a military chaplain in the midst of the Great War. Staff member of the Sacred Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments between 1924 and 1939, Zerba was named undersecretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments on May 5, 1939, and eventually its secretary December 18, 1958. Elected archbishop of the titular see of Colosse, he received his episcopal consecration from Pope John XXIII on September 21, 1962 at the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica. Authoring across the years various studies on canon law, Zerba was created cardinal priest by Pope Paul VI in the consistory of February 22, 1965, with the title of Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore in Piazza Navona. Passing away in Rome of diabetic related complications, in accordance with his wishes he was laid to rest in the Parish of Sts. Peter and Paul of his native Castelnuovo Scrivia.
