Joseph E. Shearer

NEW OXFORD – Joseph Earl Shearer, 97, of New Oxford, formerly of Hanover, died Monday at the Brethren Home Community in New Oxford. He was the husband of Louise (Sheaffer) Shearer, to whom he was married for 34 years.
The service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wetzel Funeral Home Inc., 549 Carlisle St., Hanover. Burial will be in St. Jacob’s (Stone) Church Cemetery, Glenville. Viewing will be 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Shearer was born June 20, 1903, in Hanover. He was the son of the late George D. and Della M. (Sheaffer) Shearer.
He was a self-employed painter retiring in 1975 after more than 20 years of service, prior to that, he was a farm worker for several years and also planted tree farms for P. H. Glatfelter. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hanover.
Mr. Shearer also is survived by a step-son, David Groft of Hanover; a step-daughter, Ruth Hall of New Oxford; four step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren, and three brothers, Walter J. Shearer of Thomasville, George W. Shearer of Hanover, and Lloyd E. Shearer of York.
Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Dr. Douglas E. Johnson.
