Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 16th United States Regular Infantry on May 14, 1861, and was promoted to Captain on October 25, 1861.

He was brevetted Major, US Army on December 2, 1864 for "faithful and meritorious service in the field" and Lieutenant Colonel, US Army on April 9, 1865 for "gallantry and meritorious service during the operations resulting in the fall of Richmond and the surrender of General Lee". He resigned his commission on November 16, 1865.
